Four killed at TB Joshua church stampede

At least four people died Sunday in a stampede at a Ghana service to distribute "special anointing oil" at the Synagogue Church of All Nations founded by Nigeria’s controversial Prophet TB Joshua. The police spokesman of the Greater Accra Regional Command Freeman Tetteh said 15 others were injured and had been transferred to hospital. Mr Tetteh said the dead were three women and one man but could not give their ages. The holy oil is thought by believers to cure a variety of afflictions. Following the death of the four, "the police advice the church leadership to stop the distribution of the anointing oil," he said. Early this month Prophet Joshua and his popular church were heavily criticised after security men working for him illegally detained four journalists covering a crusade in Accra. Prophet Joshua has always courted controversy in West Africa with his weekly televised Sunday services that feature exorcism beamed across the region. Some leaders of orthodox churches have condemned his mode of worship, whilst others have questioned his background as a Christian. Joshua however dismisses all these as mere unfounded allegations stemming from jealousy by those who feel threatened by his success and what he does.
